How payment gateway charges work

  1. Platform fee (TDR). A percentage of every successful payment, deducted before the money reaches your bank. Failed payments are free.
  2. GST on the fee. 18% GST is added to the fee only, not to your sale. A 2% fee costs 2.36% in total.
  3. Payment method matters. Amex, Diners, corporate cards, EMI and international cards cost more because card networks charge more for them.
  4. UPI has zero MDR by government rule, but gateways charge their platform fee for the checkout, security and automatic order matching.
  5. Settlement speed. Standard settlement is T+1 or T+2 working days; instant settlement costs extra, usually 0.2–0.35%.
  6. Fixed fees. Most standard plans have no setup or yearly fee. Some plans charge a yearly software or maintenance fee.

Worked example: ₹1,000 order

Fee rateFeeGST (18%)You receive
1.95%₹19.50₹3.51₹976.99
2%₹20.00₹3.60₹976.40
3%₹30.00₹5.40₹964.60

How to choose a payment gateway for your online store

  1. Check your payment mix. If most buyers pay by UPI, the UPI rate decides your cost; if you sell abroad, the international rate does.
  2. Compare the yearly cost, not just the %. A 0.05% difference is small on ₹1 lakh a month but adds up on ₹50 lakh.
  3. Check your platform support. A ready OpenCart extension means faster, cheaper setup.
  4. Look at settlement and support. Wholesale businesses with tight cash flow value T+1 settlement and a reachable account manager.
  5. Keep a backup gateway. If your main gateway goes down during a sale, a second one keeps orders coming.

Frequently asked questions

What are payment gateway charges in India?

Most gateways charge a platform fee of about 1.95%–2% of each successful payment plus 18% GST on that fee, so 2% becomes about 2.36% in total. There is usually no setup fee or annual fee on standard plans. Amex, Diners, corporate and international cards cost more, typically 3–5%.

Is UPI free for merchants in India?

The MDR on UPI payments from bank accounts is zero by government rule, so banks and the UPI network charge nothing. Payment gateways still charge their own platform fee for checkout, security, reconciliation and settlement — for example Razorpay charges 2% + GST on UPI. A direct UPI QR from your bank avoids the fee but gives no automatic order matching on your website.

Which is the cheapest payment gateway in India?

On published standard rates, Cashfree (1.95%), Paytm and PhonePe (1.99%) are slightly cheaper than Razorpay, PayU and CCAvenue (2%). New-merchant offers can make the first months free. The cheapest overall depends on your payment mix — use the calculator on this page with your own monthly sales.

Is GST charged on payment gateway fees?

Yes. 18% GST is charged on the gateway's fee, not on your full sale amount. On a ₹1,000 order with a 2% fee, the fee is ₹20 and GST is ₹3.60, so you pay ₹23.60. GST-registered businesses can usually claim this GST as input tax credit.

How long do payment gateways take to settle money?

Standard settlement is usually T+1 to T+2 working days, meaning the money reaches your bank one or two working days after the payment. Most gateways offer faster or instant settlement for an extra fee of around 0.2–0.35%.

Which payment gateway works best with OpenCart?

Razorpay publishes an official OpenCart extension and supports UPI, cards, netbanking, wallets and EMI in one checkout, which makes it the most common choice. PayU, Cashfree, CCAvenue, Paytm, PhonePe and Easebuzz can all be connected to OpenCart through their payment APIs. BizTorq sets up and tests whichever gateway you choose.

Can I use two payment gateways on one website?

Yes. Many stores keep a second gateway as a backup in case the first one has downtime, or use one for domestic and another for international payments. OpenCart supports several payment methods at checkout.

How often is this comparison updated?

Every month. Each gateway row shows the date it was last checked and a link to the source, so you can confirm the current rate before signing up.
